Q: Why do the groups work so well? A: They are set up to get conversation flowing, using a variety of techniques to meet the needs of each member. Structured exercises are mixed with open conversation to allow for unique contribution, expression of personal interests, and spontaneity.
Q: What theories is the program based on? A: The program uses a combination of theories from coach's training and teaching English as a Second Language, as well as Relationship Development Intervention (RDI), DIR, which is a concept for Functional Development of Individual Differences in Relationships, and prior study of Speech and Language Therapy.
Q: Who is our new associate? A: Alyson "Aly" McGregor is a cartoonist and teacher of literacy and art who has taught in Vancouver, B.C., Beijing, China, and Taipei, Taiwan, using her drawing talents to unleash creativity in the deaf and learning disabled. Aly now uses visual exercises to add sensory spice and enthusiasm to further energize individual expression in our Gift of Gab™ groups.
In 1991 while working with the deaf in Mexico, she discovered a neurologically based process, "Girl Cakes 2-40" that allowed people to tap into their creativity. "Srta. Aly", as her Mexican students called her, has used Girl Cakes 2-40 to create a program that teaches literacy using art, which she has taught in Sandy, OR, Edmonds, WA, and IREE (a school for the deaf) in San Miguel Allende, Mexico. Ms. McGregor is a graduate of the UW.
